Raika ~ 来鹿

I was in the big city for a day and a half with Goda-sensei this weekend.  Goda-sensei is a new arrival at my board of ed who lives in Koyama during the week and goes back to 姶良 (Aira) to see his family on the weekends (when he's not too busy).  It was Nadine's birthday so I met up with her and some of the city English teachers for a bit.

The gang was all there.

Later, I was treated to some spektaklar sushi by Goda-sensei's sensei (Goda-sensei²?), Kitagawa-sensei, who lives in a sick penthouse downtown.  He's an 江戸っ子 (edokko), or Tokyoite, which means that he is quite partiular about his sushi, tempura, soba, and other specialties of the capital.  For example, I learned the correct way to eat nigirizushi (the kind made up of a slab of raw fish on top of vinegared rice).  The trick, it seems, is to dip only a third of the fish (and none of the rice) into the soy sauce, and then flip it over when you eat it so the fish is resting on your tongue.  うめ~!I also had buckwheat-flavored ice-cream tempura, which is much more delicious than it may sound.

I spent the night at Goda-sensei's family home, and took a morning constitutional on Sunday along the fishing flats with the sensei and his wife.

(Spot her in the corner?)
