Sightseeing

A few weeks ago, at the start of the new school year, I tagged along on a trip (meant for the new teachers) to places of interest in Kimotsuki.

A dish at the Uchinoura Space Center (it's like 100 feet wide or something).  Uchinoura is home to one of Japan's two aeronautics bases--there's a couple of launches a year but I keep missing them.

A statue of Susumu Nikaido at his family's residence in Kimotsuki.  He studied at USC in California and toured the United States in 1941.  (He also apparently underwent a relatively new treatment for tuberculosis that saved his life.)  He sued for peace between the US and Japan and ran for office on a peace platform but lost.  He later became a Liberal Democrat (LDP) member of the Diet.

This is the okusu, or big camphorwood.  It's gotta be the biggest in Kyushu, if not Japan.  It is gi-normous and produces camphor, a white solid used variously through the centuries as culinary spice, incense, and insect repellant.

  1. Great tree photos - but camphor as a spice??? guess it keeps the insects out of dinner...

  2. Let me just say that I'm so happy you're back blogging again. I had this hole in my soul while you were gone.

Also, start of the new school year? How long are you going to be in Japan for? Does this mean that you'll be there for another year?

Clearly we need to Skype sometime soon and sort all of this out.
