Get ready for the year of the Cow!  C'est bientôt l'année du buffle !

Merry Christmas!  A grand time was had by all here.  Although Christmas Day is not a public holiday (like Tuesday was), I had a Christmas potluck at my house for members of the Eikaiwa (English conversation class).  I dug out the Christmas lights that were in the closet and may have been bought by any of the ten previous teachers who lived here before me--kind of mystical and atavistic, ain't it?  I've been told by the Powers That Be in Tokyo that one must always ask for permission before posting pictures of people, so I will limit this post to the picture of Momo-chan (above), whom I got as a Secret Santa present.

She is very soft.  Her name is the Japanese onomatopoeia for the lowing of cows and is properly Mōmō-chan (モーモーちゃん), with long vowels. Short vowels would make it 桃(もも)ちゃん, which would mean "peach," and most peaches are obviously a lot smaller than a cow.

The water is scalding hot.  I don't know where they got the snow from.  L'eau, paraît-il, est brûlante.  Je ne sais pas d'où ils ont apporté de la neige.

Joyeux Noël ! On s'est bien marré ici au Japon. Bien que Noël n'est pas un jour férié (comme l'était mardi, l'anniversaire de l'empereur), j'ai invité les membres de mon eikaiwa (classe de conversation anglais) chez moi pour un potluck. J'ai fouillé dans mon cabinet pour en sortir des lumières de Noël (qui appartenaient à un des profs qui ont habité la maison avant moi). Je ne vais pas publier mes photos de la soirée, puisque je n'ai pas demandé la permission aux concernés, mais voilà une photo de Mōmō-chan, la vache en peluche que j'ai reçue comme cadeau.

Son nom est l'onomatopée japonaise pour le meuglement de la vache. (Les voyelles sont longues--avec des courtes ça signifierait "pêche," ce qui est evidemment beaucoup plus petit qu'une vache.
