Izumi

Dr. Tsumagari took me on a day trip to his other home in Izumi, which is famous throughout Japan for its wintering cranes, and to meet his lovely wife.

These cranes (from Siberia) were wintering hardcore!  Actually, the City of Izumi feeds them twice a day, which is sounding like a pretty good deal the way the economy is heading.  Pretty peaceful, huh?  Take a listen below (fair warning, it's a fair din).

People come from all over Japan to see them.

This was in a place called Yunoko Villa Española, in Kumamoto Prefecture (which I can now check off on the list I'm keeping).

A little tropical island in Kumamoto.

Limpid water, check.

Just across the Kumamoato.

Onward!

This guy was chilling in an alcove on the water (he's good, thanks--that's sake AND a nicotine energy drink laid in offering on his stoop).

This is the biggest shrine bell in Japan!  Note the cranes.

And this was a crane statue at the entrance to the shrine.
