Record Player

I've bought a record player from the "Recycle Shop" near my house, along with a few dusty vinyls. The deck itself is very basic--it is billed on the front as a "Compact Stereo System Mic Mixing" (it came with a rinky-dink microphone that plugs into the front) but I'm pretty happy with it. I got a Japanese-issue early Beatles hits album ("Oldies, but Goldies!"), a live recording of a Woodstock-esque Japanese folk and love concert from 1971 (Mark would be proud), an album of marches by the Band of the Grenadier Guards (conducted by Capt. R.B. Bashford; Frank would be proud), and a 45 (is that what you call them?) of Christmas music, just in case (Jesus would be proud). I even got a free wind-up alarm clock out of the deal--it's see-through and all the gears are different colors! The festival was in Gifu-ken, maybe they have it every year now. Haruko, you might try looking it up?

It's been typhooning or something out here so I popped in the marches and started White Teeth by the window. When Pomp and Circumstance came on, I remembered the absolutely perfect weather on Commencement Day and got a bit emotional. Best years, no?



J'ai acheté un électrophone (est-ce bien le mot?) d'occasion, ainsi que quelque disques couverts de poussière. L'appareil lui-même est plûtot simple, avec un micro genre jouet qui se branche et réduit le volume de la chanson pour un effet "karaoke"--mais je l'aime bien tout de même. J'ai acheté aussi un album de tubes de Beatles, un enregistrement d'un festival de folk de l'été de 1971, et un album de marches militaires jouées (je crois) par un corps militaire britannique. Et un album de chansons de Noël en plus, pour faire écouter mes étudiants en décembre. Le monsieur qui me les a vendu m'a offert un réveil-matin transparent avec un mécanisme multicolore là-dedans!

On est en pleine tempête alors je me suis décidé de rester chez moi; j'ai mis l'album de marches et commencé un nouveau roman. Lorsque "Pomp and Circumstance" (qu'on joue à chaque cérémonie de remise de diplômes aux Etats-Unis) a commencé, ça m'a rappelé mes derniers jours à Yale . . . comme ils me manquent, mes amis!
