Hodge-podge

Mama Africa, rest in peace.

Four random things.  So I'm putzing around with Google Reader (which you should all try--it's incredible) and came across a function that let you translate news/blog feeds into your own language.  It came up with this translation for an El País article (original here).
The Smallest of the Spears Leaves Hospital

The smallest of the children of Britney Spears, Jaden James, only two years old, is already out of danger. This has been diagnosed with doctors at the hospital where he was admitted Sunday after suffering an allergic reaction caused by any food, and you have discharged late yesterday.
That's a rough allergy.

Take that, financial crisis!

Also, this is already old news, but someone (finally) made a statue of Kate Moss out of solid gold.  The artist, Marc Quinn, appears to be an airhead.  "If there was a war or anarchy this will be melted down and turned into bullion, so it's a canary in a cage down a mineshaft," he said to the Telegraph.  Hm.  Actually, useful metals like bronze and tin would probably be the first to go.

South African singer and national hero Miriam Makeba died suddenly on tour in Italy--she was a vocal opponent of apartheid and a beautiful singer.  I saw her at the Carthage Music Festival a few years ago.  Here she is on Dutch TV in 1979.  This is beautiful song--a wedding song in Xhosa--and in the first part of the video she talks about the clicks she uses!  She will be missed.

And finally, a shout-out to my aunts Fattouma and Aida in Tunisia who've kept up with my blog throughout all its absurd twists and hiatuses and email me now and then.  'Aishkum!

  1. i can't decide which is more awesome, the commentary on the statue or the ridiculously sweet african video. either way, i suppose i shouldn't have doubted your blog entry would be saturated with awesomeness.

  2. Occasionally when the Kyushoku is completely unidentifiable I wish I could claim to be "allergic to any food."

Me: "I think I'm allergic to these lumps."
Teacher: "Do you even know what those are?"
Me: "No, but I'm allergic to food today."
