Volcano

Volcanoes. Gotta lava'm.

I'm in Kagoshima City, the capital of the prefecture, for some job training for a couple of days. (I'm writing this from a very slick internet café.) The capital stares out into Kagoshima Bay, which is dominated by an impressive (and very active) volcano. It spews ash on the city every once in a while--if you're interested, you can get the latest volcanic ash advisories here.

What would you name a colossal, active, destructive volcano that towers menacingly over your population, if it were up to you? The name they came up with, Sakurajima, sounds pretty bad-ass, until you find out it means Cherry Blossom Island. (Wasn't that a level in Mario RPG?)

Also, Wikipedia tells me that on October 29, 1268, Conradin, the last Duke of Swabia (whatever) was beheaded for failing to capture Sicily in the name of the House of Hohenstaufen (sic) from Charles of Anjou--which does lend a certain somber quality to the day.

J'écris depuis la capitale de la préfecture, Kagoshima, où je me trouve pendant deux jours pour un stage. (J'ai trouvé un cyber pour accéder à l'internet.) La capitale donne sur la baie, où se situe un volcan très impréssionant (et très actif). Il jette des cendres sur la ville régulièrement--si tu t'y intéresses, tu peux lire les avertissements de précipitation de cendres au Japon ici.

Comment nommerais-tu un volcan gigantesque et déstructeur qui menace ta ville ? Le nom que les japonais l'on donné, Sakurajima, a l'air plutôt cool, mais ça veut dire en effet ''île des fleurs du cerisier.''
