Typhoon

After wreaking havoc in Taiwan, Typhoon Sinlaku is approaching Japan. My town is right on the southern tip of Japan, on the Pacific Ocean side. As a result, we're getting a lot of face time with Sinlaku, which is named after a Micronesian goddess. According to the news, we got a little less than 10 inches of rain in the past six hours and 15-20 mph winds. Here's the trajectory of Sinlaku:

I went to the first class I was assigned today and corrected exercises ("When did Mother Teresa receive the Nobel Peace Prize?") but was gently told to go home and prepare for the typhoon after that. By all accounts, this is comparatively a tiny one, but I was sure impressed. This is what the view was like outside my office today:

The kicker, though, is that the forecast for tomorrow is sunny! I wonder how much the river will have swollen. I feel like Noah (of Ark fame) or Aureliano Buendía, waiting to see what the world is like after the Rains . . .

Le typhon Sinlaku (nommé d'après une déesse micronésienne) s'est tourné vers le Japon après avoir provoqué des dégats importants au Taïwan. Je me trouve tout près du trajet de l'ouragan, dans l'extrême sud du pays en face (plus ou moins) de l'Océan pacifique. Mes collègues m'ont rassuré que Sinlaku n'est pas trop dangereux--la région en a connu plusieurs qui ont était dévastateurs. Tout de même, j'avais pas hâte de me promener dehors, comme vous pouvez constater en regardant le vidéo ci-dessus ! Je suis allé à l'école aujourd'hui, mais on m'a laissé rentrer en avance à cause du typhon, puisque je n'y suis pas habitué.
